He made money from the church through his art. He started painting when he was a child and people could tell he had great talent. He left school at thirteen to become an apprentice to an artist named Medici. His father did not support his decision to leave school and wanted him to work in banking. Michelangelo lived in Florence, Italy during the Italian Renaissance era. His mother died when he was six years old.
