It may seem so at first, but by the end of this literary work, Gawain begins to evolve as a character. Towards the end of the story, Gawain goes from flat and unchanging to a growing, rounded solar hero who learns from his bad choices. When it came time for Gawain and the Green Knight to reverse their roles and play the rest of the game, the magic belt Gawain received worked as it was supposed to, in that Gawain would be injured but not fatally .
