  • Essay / My Personal Philosophy of Nursing - 1742

This article is a first attempt at forming and articulating my own philosophy of nursing. Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is just two weeks old and I am already enlightened and challenged to expand my nursing experience. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience so far, including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and the values associated with it, and my visions for the future. Choosing Nursing Nursing came to me in a roundabout way. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already neglected the field of nursing due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) who left me a negative impression of the field of nursing. I entered college planning to major in pre-med or biology. I had constructed a vision of college as being different – scholarly, intellectual, advanced – in some way from the school before it. I quickly became disappointed. My first biology class was a bitter disappointment and I completely turned away from any thoughts of a medical or health-related career. Many years, colleges and majors later, I found myself still without instinctive direction. On a whim, I decided to go to EMT school. That’s where I finally discovered the healthcare field and immediately loved it. After completing the program, I worked on the 911 system and also took a job as a patient care technician in a pediatric emergency department. I quickly realized that the hospital environment was where I wanted to be and that I needed to become a nurse. That's what I did, and I haven't left the emergency department since! The Essence of NursingI truly believe that the heart, the essence of nursing (outside of a true emergency where measures to maintain or revive life become essential...... middle of paper ......en I have a goal I work hard and don't give up easily. always looking to the future and learning from my mistakes rather than letting them get me down I have a certain natural intelligence, and what I lack I make up for in perseverance and tenacity I have conviction. inherent that I will achieve my goals, which allows me to stay positive and pursue my goals even when it is difficult to do so I will have to overcome certain obstacles to achieve my goals Family obligations will test my skills. when it comes to time management and procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles I face.
