It has been one hundred and twenty-two years since "Lizzie Borden took an axe...", according to the popular nursery rhyme, and Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home; but even today, it remains one of America's most famous, if not most infamous, unsolved crimes. Although Lizzie was acquitted and no one was ever convicted of the crime; it is still popular opinion that Lizzie was, in fact, the murderer. Few people have any doubts about Lizzie's guilt, although there is no one alive today who could witness what happened. The eventful day in August was followed by a very short trial. There are many reasons why she could have been found guilty, but also many justifications for her acquittal; and it makes sense that it is being discussed and talked about in 2014. Lizzie Andrew Borden was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, where she spent her entire life, in July 1860. She lived with her wealthy father, Andrew Borden , and mother-in-law, Abby Borden. Lewis shares that Lizzie's biological mother, Sarah, died when Lizzie was very young and Andrew remarried a few years later. The three of them, along with Lizzie's sister Emma, who was ten years older, lived a rather simple life together. On the morning of August 4, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home with an ax or hatchet. During her testimony at the inquest, Lizzie claimed she left her father lying on the sofa and went to the barn to get some sinker to go fishing with (although she also shared that she hadn't gone fishing for almost five years).
