    How do you feel when you drive past some sort of factory or factory and see an obnoxiously sized chimney spewing fumes into the air or chemical drainage pipe flowing into a water supply? The sense of disgust at how these companies are getting away with it not only aligns with the views of environmental activists, but also implicates the United States government. A company must decide how it wants to run its business, whether unethically, taking shortcuts, or adhering to ethical and legal standards. This issue boils down to the viewpoint that businesses can fall into if they are more concerned with using unethical means to gain some sort of advantage or if they prefer to operate in a way with boundaries while still respecting ethical and legal standards. Until the 1970s, the government rarely reported the extent of pollution and its effects on the American population. The Environmental Protection Agency has several branches throughout the United States to help enforce and institute laws and regulations affecting the government (EPA).
