It is not only used in literacy, but also in other means of communication such as speech and the arts. It's the nature of humans to make assumptions. We continue to judge other people, objects and events whose causes we know. It is not a question of whether our assumptions are right or wrong here, but we have been happy with the label given and taken it as truth. There is a danger if labeling is directed at oneself, as it often tends to be negative rather than positive.
