English as the official language of the United States could benefit the US government and America as a whole. America has long been a multicultural nation and an English-speaking nation since its founding. Constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which reinforces the American people's belief that English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, as English has always provided much-needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since its inception. Being made up of diverse peoples and being able to still use your own language may seem preferable because we encourage individuality and don't want anyone to disappear into the soup. However, this position also means that more people are needed as interpreters and that more programs and information must be easily accessible to ensure understanding. More people would take up jobs associated with interpreting, whether on paper or face-to-face, in order to cope with the transition. If English were the official language, instead of just having interpreters in public places, there would be opportunities to learn the language through classes, etc. Currently, immigrants are expected to have to learn some English to get by, while children must learn on their own to survive school. With English as the official language, we would feel obligated to offer assistance to those we hope to learn the language. In a part of Canada, where there are two languages, children learn both languages. If we had an official language, we would be responsible for ensuring that everyone had the chance to learn it. As Mississippi Code Section 3-3-31 statutes show, "...the purpose of (middle of paper......and/or immigrants) we would always preserve the cultural heritage of the early America.
