There has been a hubbub around racial and ethnic discrimination during traffic stops carried out by the police. Police have been accused of arresting a particular group of people, often arguing that this group is likely to commit a crime such as illegally possessing drugs or even weapons without a license. Most researchers who have discussed racial profiling do not deny its existence. In this article, the definition of racial profiling will be elucidated. Additionally, the overall effects of racial profiling will be examined. This article will compare the arguments for and against racial profiling and, from this juxtaposition, a summary of the findings will be made. The review will allow a well-reasoned conclusion to be drawn as to whether racial profiling should be completely banned. Empirical evidence from various states will be relied upon. In essence, this article is intended to engage the debate toward eliminating racial profiling in the context of street crime. States such as California, Maryland and New Jersey have recognized the existence of racial profiling within their borders. It was only after the escalation of acts of terrorism in 2001 that attitudes towards racial profiling changed definitively. These acts led to the reduction of racial profiling, but even to this day, police still practice it in many jurisdictions. Studies were conducted in Texas in 2005.
