Reflecting on the practice of nursing or midwifery and recognizing the feelings, beliefs and outcomes of others is beneficial to the profession. Critical thinking has been used in nursing and midwifery practice for many years. Thought is vital for reflection. Being able to think systematically and rationally results in a feeling of reflective awareness. Critical thinking improves the safety of practice and the skills of nurses and midwives. This allows them to make safe and effective decisions about their work. It involves scientific reasoning, use of the nursing process, decision making, and reasoning about problems. It allows nurses to make rational decisions about the most effective ways to achieve their goals. Reflection in nursing and midwifery facilitates technical control and improvement of procedural approaches to their work.
