Tests have been done showing that drivers of expensive cars are less likely to yield to pedestrians or other cars. They are also more likely to help themselves to candy intended for children. People of higher status tend to have a greater sense of entitlement and are less generous. People of all statuses become less kind and less happy when they live in unequal societies. Their status anxiety also becomes greater. Inequality is bad for mental health and plays a role in our personality. Gilani's article is the one I disagree with the most. Only one approach was suggested for reducing income inequality, in all three articles. Gilani's suggestion was to create a fair tax, that is, to provide a progressive flat tax. This would allow the rich to pay the same tax rate as the poor, even if their economic status was completely different. Ronald Reagan served as President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. The Economist ("Rich Pickings") shows a quantum leap in revenue sharing during the final years of his presidency. That's when he tried to make everyone pay the same relative amount of taxes, as Gilani suggests. He tried to bring tax percentages closer together, but this further increased income inequality.
