  • Essay / My Interpretation of Raphael's Sistine Madonna

In August 2012, it was the 500th anniversary of Raphael's great masterpiece, the painting known as the “Sistine Madonna” (Bleibtreu, 2013). Although many years have passed, all the mysteries have not yet been discovered regarding this painting. My article is about my interpretation of the "Sistine Madonna" incorporated with some facts about the Renaissance and the colors of this period, including the opinions of famous people, magazine reviews and the interpretation of Raphael Sanzio. Additionally, I include the opinions of simple people like my family and friends in this article. This painting was one of Raphael's last paintings and he painted it after receiving a request from Pope Julius II, for the San Sisto church, which is why it was called "Sistine Madonna" (Shelley Esaak, undated). In this painting, the main character is the Virgin Mary. She is in blue and red (she appears in these colors in almost all classical paintings), with the child Jesus Christ in her arms, standing on the clouds and surrounded by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara. In front of them are two little angels leaning on their elbows. Different people have had many explanations and interpretations of this important painting, although many of these famous people looked at it from the same perspective. Despite the fact that their opinions differed, no one had a negative view of this big picture. Most of these people were inspired by it and some of them also kept the copy of “The Sistine Madonna” in their room. Fyodor Dostoyevsky was captivated by this painting and said: “What beauty, what innocence and what sadness in this face, what humility and what suffering in these eyes” (Susan Benford, undated).
