Politics began to play a larger role in the lives of American colonists early in a country's growth. After the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the country faced the problem of creating a process of state governance. The Patriots feared forming a centralized Parliament, as in Britain, because the rich were abusing power. Initially, the vision was to give states the authority to govern and leave minimal power to a National Union. But as the years passed and conflicts arose, it became necessary to create a national government using the U.S. Constitution as a model. The purpose of this article is to learn what led to the formation of the US Constitution. First, it is important to explore the historical milestones, between 1781 and 1789, that explain the evolution of state and federal governments. Second, it is essential to understand how these steps influenced Congress in drafting the U.S. Constitution. At the beginning of creating a government, Congress required each state to build a republic that would be a "government in which the people elected their own representatives" (Isemann). , Amstutz, 11). There were two views on how to design a state republic.
