Essay / Imperialism - 1230
Cannons blaze on the battlefield, hammers strike new factories, and steam engines roar across uncharted waters. Imperialism in European countries marked a turning point in the world and its future. “Imperialism is the domination by one country of the political, economic or cultural life of another country or region. Imperialism often occurs when a stronger country supports or takes control of a weaker country. (1) Imperialism has affected many parts of the world and populations in different ways. Under the “new imperialism,” European countries decided to use aggressive tactics to perpetuate their customs in other countries. However, each country that imperialized had three specific reasons that would benefit their country: economic interests, political and military interests, and humanitarian and religious goals were all reasons for the new imperialism. The economic outcome of imperialism would give manufacturers access to natural resources, allowing them to expand their markets across the world. The colonies helped increase the European population, which helped support the economy. New steamships and warships needed places around the world to pick up and exchange supplies. Some lands and knowledge were only used for the prestige of owning more than another country. Many people, such as missionaries, doctors, and colonial officials, believed it was their duty to spread Western ideas, including medicine, law, and the Christian religion. They showed their compassion by spreading their ideas across the sea to their “little brothers” in distant lands. European countries have often used Social Darwinism as a pretext to improve weaker countries and people. Industrialization was successful because diverse countries were unable to unite the necessary tools on paper and use them in modern scenes. From the Industrial Revolution to today, we can observe the differences and similarities in lifestyles of the past in order to make the best decisions for our country today and in the future. - p. 1.
