  • Essay / Short Story: What's Really Happening to David - 837

SHORT STORYDavid was a 45-year-old Scottish man living in Florence for 15 years. He spent his summer vacation there with his brother and fell in love with the city. He loved it so much that he didn't even go home. His brother died shortly after their trip. David was never able to fully process and recover from this loss. But as if that wasn't enough, his parents simply ignored David and wanted to get away from him for fear of being hurt again. David took this personally and vowed never to speak to them. A promise he has kept ever since. To compensate for his loneliness, he throws himself into work. He owns a café in Ponte Vecchio and loves his job. David's life was not special or exciting, he lived an average life. With his old bike, he went to work every morning, came home late and fell asleep. He had no one except his beloved lionfish. David would come home late and then feed his fish. Once that was done, he would prepare food or have some at the café. David ate at his small wooden table, topped with a dull yellow light bulb. The table is next to a miniature window with a view of the Duomo. Sometimes a cat would visit him for a little snack. It was often the highlight of the day, after greeting the florist on the way to work. David had a crush on her ever since he saw her 10 years ago. He didn't dare talk to her until 4 years ago. Since then, he took the long way to work, just to say hello to the florist whose name he didn't even know. It was 5 p.m. on a hot September in Florence. The sun burned on David's head. David was deep in thought when suddenly a little boy patted him on the shoulder. The boy......in the middle of paper......f in a dark, stinking and hot shed. He was completely exhausted and helpless. Questions swirled through David's mind. He thought about his life, his family and everything around him. The thought of death approaching overwhelmed him, he knew he was ready. He wondered if he would live his current life again. He realized how lonely his life was and that ignoring it was no longer the answer. Money didn't bring him any happiness. No one would be sad about his death. David was devastated and heartbroken. He felt more alone than he had ever felt before. What is the meaning of life? Should he die? He had a lot of thoughts, everything he thought about made him even more depressed. When the Eastern European man went into the shed to check on David, he found him dead. David had strangled himself and was now hanging from the ceiling..
