This is how the patient functions in everyday areas, including: physical, psychological and social areas. Physically, we examine how the patient feels about themselves in the area of “feeling of self.” This includes body image, the ability to thrive both socially and privately, and having a sense of identity. Leukemia patients often experience hair loss and skin rashes due to various treatment options. These factors can hinder how the individual achieves developmental milestones. For Kate Fitzgerald, this involves having her first boyfriend, going to prom, experimenting sexually, and even being able to have relationships with friends where she can date them. Most importantly, among adolescents with cancer, a sense of identity is a critical attribute to grasp. In Kate's situation, it is evident that her sense of identity is lacking. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of five and has known nothing but a life filled with treatments and surgeries. She saw herself as a "sick Kate" who was always trying to improve herself, not as a teenager discovering who she was and who she wanted to become. These factors can have an impact on the psychological domain of the patient. Collectively, when they are unable to experience these things because of cancer, it is not uncommon for them to exhibit signs and symptoms of depression, denial, or anxiety. In the movie there is a scene where Kate has been lying in bed for days
