  • Essay / Reasons for lowering the age of criminal responsibility...

Knowing that the age of criminal responsibility is set at 10 years, children may think twice about the consequences of their actions. Additionally, parents and teachers will need to work harder to teach their children about the negative consequences of committing a crime. In September 2013, an eleven-year-old boy was arrested by a police officer for sexually assaulting a thirteen-year-old girl. The eleven-year-old knew he would not be charged because of his age and told the arresting officer, “You got me. So what are you going to do? This child was well aware that nothing could be done to punish him for this act, and he is certainly not the only one in the world who knows this. If the age of criminal responsibility had been lowered to 10, this child could have been punished for what he did and he would have known that he could not get away with this again. Unfortunately, the age of criminal responsibility was not 10 years old and the child was able to commit sexual assault with impunity and could do it again knowing that nothing can be done to prevent it.
