Essay / Classism and Prejudice in Today's Society - 1362
In today's society, people are considered to belong to different classes based on the amount of money they bring in. The categorization of people is known as classism. Classism is simply the prejudice or favor of people belonging to a particular social class. Classism is known as one of the biggest social issues plaguing the world today. Classes are formed according to the rules of the following institutions: government regulations and economic situation. It is held in place by a system of beliefs and cultural attitudes that classify people according to their characteristics: economic status, family ancestry, professional status and educational level. There are three main classifications that people qualify for. They include the upper or upper class which includes the richest people. The middle class which includes people who bring in the average income. Finally, the class called the lower class which includes people who have only one income or no income ("What is classism?"). In classrooms, these classes still exist and students in each class have different ways of learning and perceiving school. As educators, we must look beyond their habits and approach every class the same way. The main problem of lower grade students when learning in the classroom is a lack of self-confidence based on real or apparent weakness in the home environment. These students often feel unwanted. They are very aware of the class they come from and the place and position in which people classify them, they often feel the need to hide their origin. Students classified in this particular class often arrive at school with a lower level of academic skills and engagement than their middle-ranked peers...... middle of paper...... prospects class. I will broaden perspectives so that my students don't end up accidentally creating new stereotypes about different groups. The final principle of my philosophy of education as it relates to classism in the classroom is to not isolate a single class represented in my classroom. I will work individually and collaborate to change classroom and school practices that devalue our students. If I see a student in need or struggling, I will work with them individually to help them complete their assignment or learn a specific topic. If a student raises a concern with me, I will speak with them individually and then speak with the whole class to collaborate on the situation. No student in my class will be hurt or discouraged because of their background and class. Instead, we will resolve situations and treat everyone with the same respect..
