    An athlete who continues his education at the university level will be reprimanded if illegal drugs or performance enhancing drugs are used. If a person used drugs for most of high school, it would be extremely difficult for them to stop using. When the season arrives and drug tests are conducted, the student "will lose a full year of eligibility for the first offense... . . and are excluded from competition for a full season” (NCAA). This could cause the athlete to lose their scholarship and they may not be accepted for another season. However, if they are allowed to play the following season and later, they suffer "a second positive test for illicit drugs which results in another year of lost eligibility and one year of exclusion from competition" (NCAA). If two seasons are missed, the athlete will most likely be out of shape and have very little chance of making the team the following season. If performance-enhancing drugs are discovered second, it will “render the student-athlete permanently ineligible” (NCAA). This would happen because as drug use becomes more frequent, it becomes more difficult to quit.
