  • Essay / Effect of Computers on Human Society - 614

Early computer developments began in the late 1960s, at that time its common use was for complex mathematical calculations and was mainly used by government corporations. Over time, computers became very popular and they were used on a personal level. The Apple Lisa computer was the first successful personal computer with a graphical interface, introduced in 1983. Nowadays, computers have become extremely popular and can be found almost everywhere. We are becoming extremely dependent on computer technology, which will negatively impact human society due to the following reasons: lack of social trust, threat to privacy, health problems and lack of creative ideas. Social trust is what is used to describe how it relates to relationships with others. The level of social confidence may differ from person to person, but excessive computer use actually causes a lack of social confidence. Before the popularity of personal computers, children and adults maintained regular interactions, rather than relying on computers. Interacting with others is an important thing; it involves the exchange of different ideas from different people and helps maintain social trust. Professor Lee Cheng Ean from the School of Communication at Taylor University Malaysia says face-to-face communication is faster, easier and more convenient than computer communication and face-to-face communication represents a strong social presence. Angela Sinickas, president of Sinickas Communications, Inc., further advised not to let face-to-face meetings be overshadowed by technology (SCM, 2009). She claimed that "all the online communication did not make employees better... middle of paper... and their visual abilities continued to be reduced, such as blurred distant vision, even after stopping working on a computer. If nothing is done to resolve the cause of the problem, the symptoms will continue to recur and possibly worsen with future computer use. edu/538403/Face-to-face_Versus_Computer-mediated_Communication_Exploring_Employees_Preference_of_Effective_Employee_Communication_Channel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Facebook#Student_privacy_concerns http://news.bbc.co.uk /2/hi/technology/6980454.stm http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jun/06/nsa-phone-records-verizon-court-order Johnson, Deborah. ,Computer ethics.
