Before reading the course material regarding ethnic space, I first sought to predict possible descriptions of an ethnic space, incorporating discussions and classroom themes in my thought processes. As a result, I thought that perhaps the definition looks a lot like either an area with one main ethnic group, or, conversely, an area filled with many diverse ethnic groups. Subsequently, I read the essays on ethnic space, in order to deduce the meaning of an ethnic space. In particular, Robert J. Rodino's essay provided considerable insight into the subject of ethnic enclaves. According to Rodino, an ethnic enclave occurs when a particular ethnic group lives in the middle of the dominant ethnic group (Rodino 94). Even if this definition has a political connotation, it nevertheless sheds some light on my understanding. However, when Rodino used the term “ethnic community” in the context of an ethnic enclave, I recognized the relationship between the two (Rodino 100). That being said, an ethnic community, or space, is a component of an ethnic enclave. The idea of ​​an ethnic community challenged me to appropriately express an ethnic space. So I decided to incorporate this into my interpretation of an ethnic space, as well as my personal experiences. All things considered, an ethnic space occurs when a city displays a significant cultural vibe, due to the predominant ethnic group in that area. Likewise, due to my contrasting cultural experiences, Rowland Heights presents this significant cultural environment, due to the predominant ethnic group in the city. Overall, these factors contribute to how Rowland Heights appropriately illustrates this classification of an ethnic community.
