Essay / Distinguished Scholar Program - 923
The Distinguished Scholar Program is a strict and challenging program. It encourages students to challenge themselves and reach their full potential. Changing a few rules and parts, such as lowering the required grade point average (GPA) and dropping some of the more rigorous courses, like honors chemistry, can truly make it a beneficial and successful program in the mainstream education system. Not to mention the vast improvement in students' test scores and overall outlook on education. Distinguished Scholars is a unique program at Wilson Classical High School in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). It is a combination of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, honors courses, and students must take eight courses instead of the five to seven courses required by other schools. Many students in this program face additional challenges and pressure related to the program. While other teenagers go out at 1:10 a.m. and have fun after school, these students wait until 2:50 a.m. or even 4:00 p.m. during internships. This program would be very beneficial if it were offered with some adjustments in order to be offered to the mainstream education system. To begin, the Distinguished Scholar (DSO) program was created to successfully cultivate talented and bright students. Subsequently, these students satisfy most college and university requirements. For example, the DSP as well as the specialized program require a minimum of 280 credits. These are two of the only programs in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) that require significantly more credits. Other high schools require only 220 credits for graduation. Students must complete three college-level courses and one honors course in science, English, and social studies. The goal...... middle of paper ...... is not as tempted to engage in bad social activities. An example of the above would be smoking, graffiti, gang membership, fighting, and unprotected sex. Additionally, additional support and higher education prevent students from regressing, becoming discouraged, or even dropping out. In conclusion, the Distinguished Scholar Program (DSP) is an excellent program that should be included in the education system on a global level. This will help challenge the bright and capable young minds of students. The DSP provides a very challenging curriculum and should be balanced with incentives and/or positive support in the best interest of the student. With such a vigorous program, higher test scores and grades are included. The inclusion of this program will make the education system more efficient. Finally, it would create a better future for every student..
