  • Essay / Waste problem and management in island and isolated regions...

Municipal waste management is becoming more and more important in regional policies. If, on the one hand, recycling rates are currently high, it is also true that waste production is growing exponentially. Waste management is a difficult task, but in the case of island territories it is very complex, being isolated and limited territories. The need to establish a restoration plan for degraded areas, such as landfills, should also be considered. Given the continued increase in the amount of waste managed, waste constitutes one of the greatest problems facing environmental management in the Canary Islands. In small and limited spaces like islands, even taking into account the increased capacity for waste recovery, this is where the assumption that "the best waste is not produced" makes the most sense. The Canary Islands have the challenge of developing a management model that resolves the collection and treatment of new waste streams in accordance with European, national and regional legislation. Its character as an island with a large tourist population which, although not considered a legal population, generates waste must be taken into account.1. IntroductionOver time and the galloping economic and demographic growth experienced by the islands, it has long been forgotten that much of what we now call and consider waste was once reused as a domestic and local resource . Changes in consumption patterns, the rapid urbanization of the population and the increase in the standard of living of citizens have also led to a more significant increase in the scale of the problem, which today takes on a considerable scale and without precedent in isolated and limited territories such as islands. .One of the oldest methods of disposing of waste is to freely throw...... middle of paper ......mental crimes, including illegal constructions. All this leads to the indiscriminate and constant proliferation of illegal dumps, especially in coastal areas and ravines whose degradation is beginning to be worrying, especially on islands like Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Environmental rights violation activities have been significantly reduced in the Canary Islands due to increased inspection and monitoring. These spaces, like controlled landfills, require a recovery order to increase the environmental quality of the site (Santamarta, 2013). The key actions of the restoration work include: • Excavation and removal of waste in order to obtain a final relief as coherent as possible with the environment • Addition of topsoil to facilitate landscape integration • Revegetation with species adapted to the environment • Peripheral fence to prevent further releases
