Essay / Are we “having fun to death?” » - 1432
Since God breathed life into Adam, humanity has expressed its ideas and points of view through different forms of communication. From oral traditions to the World Wide Web, the evolution of communication media has shaped human thought. The book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman provides a fascinating commentary on how the cultural shift from a print-based to an image-based culture put humanity on a dangerous path toward a Huxleyan demise , where we are slaves to our own desire for entertainment. This paradigm shift in how we find and interpret information has big implications for how we educate our children, practice our religion, watch world news, and interact in politics. Postman opens his argument by focusing on the concept of news media. communication and how it represents, or is a metaphor for, the way our culture creates content for public interaction. An example used to express the content of this argument is the observation of a primitive mode of communication used by American Indians, the smoke signal. The content contained in the signals can only represent certain ideas: philosophy and politics would probably not be among them. The point of this example is that certain ideas and concepts are best articulated through a specific medium. Just as philosophy is not easily communicated through the smoke in the sky, topics with depth and meaning may not be as easily discussed or expressed using an image-based medium. Postman focuses on the effects of typographic and image-based media. For Postman, media not only functions as a structure through which information is transmitted, but actually functions as an epistemology or knowledge source for culture...... middle of paper ... as William Taft would never be elected in today's world. Image and form trump knowledge and experience, leading to a country with poor leadership. The technological revolution has produced many benefits for today's society, but the constant desire for entertainment is not one of them. The shift from a typographic culture to a flashy, image-based culture is leading our nation toward a glamorous demise. A return to text-based culture is unlikely to happen, so the best remedy for this problem would be to become aware of it. It takes a conscious effort to remain critical of the ideas presented to them. At the same time, society must find ways to use this new technology for purposes other than just entertainment. This will allow humanity to continue making this planet a better place for generations to come..
