Research focused on the use of the CBT approach is limited and fails to identify the effect of the treatment on African American children. Family factors may exacerbate the problem of attrition in the assessment and provision of mental health care for African American children. Additionally, cultural issues and family attitudes toward treatment can create barriers to successful treatment (Wilson & Cottone, 2013). CBT strategies and techniques have been considered universal and suggest that there is no need to focus on an ethnically or racially diverse population or youth of color. It should be noted, however, that there is a need to identify potential barriers and increased cultural sensitivity when working with African Americans.
