There is controversy between corporal punishment and child abuse. Many people ask themselves the question: where is the limit? When does corporal punishment become child abuse? Every parent has different parenting methods and different ways of instilling discipline within their home. Some parents believe that the use of corporal punishment is necessary to instill discipline and morality in their child(ren), while others believe that it is considered child abuse. Corporal punishment becomes abuse when it becomes disruptive and excessive to the point of causing physical and emotional harm to the child. The definition of corporal punishment and abuse must be clearly defined to avoid misconceptions and confusion. Corporal punishment is the infliction of pain as a form of discipline or punishment. Historically and culturally, corporal punishment was acceptable and provided a justification that pain, injury, and humiliation would frighten the offender into committing the same mistakes or offenses.
