The premise of the article "Changing Images of Violence in Rap Music Lyrics: 1979-1997" is that between 1979-1997, there was a drastic increase in the level of violence in rap music. this is seen in an increasingly positive light. Consequently, social conditions must change in order to reduce violence among young people. These results indicate that there has been a dramatic and sustained increase in the level of violence in rap music. The percentage of songs mentioning violence increased from 27 percent between 1979 and 1984 to 60 percent between 1994 and 1997. Additionally, depictions of violence in later songs are seen in a more positive light, as shown by their increased association with glamour, wealth, masculinity and personal prowess. Additional analyzes found that genre, particularly gangster rap, is the strongest predictor of increased violent references in songs.
