Madness is a state of mind in which a person loses his reason, he is mentally ill. In the play Hamlet, Hamlet meets his deceased father in a ghost form only to inform him about the one who caused his death and wants revenge. Now Hamlet must avenge his father's death, and the only way to do it in a less obvious way is to act like a madman. But as the play continues, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell whether Hamlet is still sane because of his actions. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare makes Hamlet's madness seem real, but only to prove that he was only acting as if he were crazy. Throughout the play, there were instances that gave the impression that Hamlet might be crazy. When he killed Polonius, Hamlet said: "And now! a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!" (III.IV). At this point, it becomes really hard to tell if Hamlet is truly mad because he kills without examining who was hiding behind the curtains, but only assumes that it was Claudius. Also, when he says "Death for a ducat" he is betting that the person he attacked was dead and sane people don't bet on other people's lives. Another instance where Hamlet may have been mad was when he was following the ghost, but his friends tried to stop him but he responded with "I am still called. Let me go, gentlemen - Heaven, I will make him a ghost who leave me! I say, go away” (I.IV) Hamlet decides to follow the ghost without hesitation if the ghost can be a devil or if he can harm him The way Hamlet reacts to. the situation, recklessly and without thinking, is similar to the characteristics of a madman At this point, his madness seems very real, but it could all be part of his plan to avenge his father's death by making it truly believe. to people that he was crazy, which would make his true intention less obvious...... middle of paper ... ...they discover the real cause of his madness, even though he pretends to be crazy , this gives Hamlet more time to avenge his father since they focus on what caused it rather than what he will do next one would believe his madness was real, but throughout the play. , he only pretends to be crazy. The way Hamlet was able to deal with certain situations proves that he is not crazy, but was trying his best to complete the task assigned by his father. He may have made rash decisions, but he only made them because if he had waited, it could have ruined his entire plan to revenge his father by faking his madness. The way Shakespeare wrote the play made it difficult to determine whether his madness was real or not, but by analyzing Hamlet's different actions, reactions, and ways of thinking, we could come to the conclusion that Hamlet's madness was not that imaginary..
