Some leaders are fair, kind, and aim to make the area they control the best it can be for everyone who lives there. Other leaders don't have the same idea. They are deceptive and the actions they take end up harming everyone in the region they rule. Joseph Stalin was one of the deceptive leaders of the Soviet Union. He caused many people to die and those who disagreed with him were sent to labor camps. In the new Animal Farm this also happens. There is a revolution on the farm and the pig, Napoleon, takes control. Using threats and harsh punishments, he becomes a dictator, just like Stalin. In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell uses political satire to correlate with Stalin's rule in Russia and his inhumane methods of controlling the country. Animal Farm was a metaphor for the Russian Revolution. The farm animals overthrew the farmer who treated them unfairly and founded their own government. Over time, the pigs became rulers, with the main pig in charge being Napoleon. Napoleon began making the other farm animals do all the work while he relaxed and ordered the others around. He trained the dogs to punish those who did not follow the rules of the farm, the main punishment being death. All the animals were subject to strict guidelines and had lost their freedom before regaining it. This concerns the Russian government in almost the same way.
