    This is not the literal definition but everything the reader believes it to be. Connotations are found throughout this sonnet and here are some of them. The second part of the verse says “seismic with laughter” (3). Seismic could mean that when she laughs, she makes the ground shake. This is a good quality because laughing helps to clear the soul and make you feel better. He admires her ability to enjoy life to the fullest. George Barker uses another example of connotation in this poem. Barker says: “Nearest, dearest, most loved and farthest” (1). “Further” could mean that she is in extreme grief. Even though she is close, she is inaccessible because of her grief. Barker implies that she is far from reality because she is so sad. “Further” could mean that she is depressed due to the recent loss of a loved one. The next example of connotation is when Barker says, “That only faith can move” (12). Barker talks about his mother's faith and her grieving a loss that caused deep grief.
