In Ainsworth's experiment, the child played very little when the caregiver was present, but when the caregiver was out from the room, the child cried and grew very anxious. However, when the caregiver returned, the child was still inconsolable for longer than was considered normal (Ashford 2013, 267). Caregiving in this type of attachment is inconsistent and unpredictable, increasing the child's anxiety and their own self-consciousness. This child's self-consciousness is reflected in his constant need to know where he stands with the parent, he becomes very clingy in an attempt to establish a strong relationship with the caregiver.
