Essay / War in the Movies: Universal Soldier - 1313
Every war will have those who support the war and those who are against the war. In 1965, those who were against the Vietnam War made their views known through many forms of protest, such as establishing organizations, rallies, and playing anti-war protest music. Anti-war protest music was an opportunity to put people's views into song to hopefully spread their message. Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote the song "Universal Soldier" in 1962 and its message was that "Universal Soldier is about individual responsibility in war and how old feudal thinking is killing us all" (Boulanger). The song "Universal Soldier" was used as a protest anthem during the Vietnam War and attempts to unravel one of life's paradoxes that war never leads to peace by examining a soldier who is representative of every soldier of every nation. Soldier's cover was released in 1964 by Buffy Sainte-Marie, a well-known singer-songwriter of the 1960s and "best known for her incisive protest anthems" (Perea). Beverly Sainte-Marie, nicknamed Buffy, was born in February. January 20, 1941 on the Piapot Cree Free Nations Reserve in Canada. She was then adopted at a very young age by an American family of Mi'kmaq Native American origin due to the death of her mother. Buffy grew up in Maine and Massachusetts, earning her dual Canadian and American citizenship. Sainte-Marie attended the University of Massachusetts where she began performing her own songs at local coffeehouses. Vanguard Records signed Sainte-Marie and in 1964 released his first album, It's My Way (Perea). This album contained the song "Universal Soldier" which caught the attention of Scottish folk singer Donovan. Donovan was an acclaimed singer in the 1...... middle of paper ......as. During the Vietnam War, soldiers had no choice whether or not to enter the war. Refusing conscription could result in a prison sentence, 2,000 men were held in prison for refusing conscription and these were only those who were taken from the 200,000 who protested conscription (Tindall 1353). Although Sainte-Marie makes a valid argument that without partisans there would be no war, war is inevitable. There are too many human beings hungry for power and ready to use any means to obtain that power. The Vietnam War was disliked by many Americans because the United States was not necessarily obligated to engage in that war, as evidenced by the reunification of South Vietnam and North Vietnam two years later. after the United States withdrew all its soldiers (Vietnam). "Universal Soldier" was written with bias but was mostly accurate regarding the history of the war..
