Essay / Character Analysis of King Lear - 1141
The play King Lear was something I had never read before. It was so confusing to me, the way they spoke with such big words. The characters in the play were so competitive and selfish. Lear's daughters were so cruel, except for Cordelia. In fact, she wanted to take care of her father, unlike the other two girls who loved Lear's documents. The same way Goneril and Regan prefer him to stay outside during the crazy storm, instead of staying with them. The girls were already so envious and competitive with each other; the situation did not improve him. Lear just wanted to love them, and they loved him and gave him attention, but he couldn't get that from them. The women in the room controlled the men, while the men listened to them as they demanded orders. The two girls are mad because they heard about Lear dividing his kingdom. They don't want to have to divide it; they wanted to control everything. They don't want Cordelia to control the kingdom because they are too envious of her. Lear tries to win the love of his daughters, but it's difficult because they're into materialistic stuff, they don't care about him. The main act I wanted to focus on was act four. I couldn't believe how they took out Gloucester's eyes and stepped on them...very horrible! In the first scene, Gloucester explains how he had his sight, he would do anything in his power to see his son again. When Edgar discovers what happened to his father, he is horrified. He can't believe they did this to him. Lear, for his part, becomes mad at Goneril and Regan's abuse of him and tries to find others to help him. Girls, I feel the need to stop being so envious of each other...... middle of paper...... girls ended up dying anyway, it's the men who survived. Women brought death upon themselves by acting as they did to everyone and to each other. The close sisters ended up killing each other. Because they trusted each other so much, they turned against each other, and neither of them was able to keep the kingdom. Overall, women back then were so different from how they are and act today. Back then, they did everything in a sneaky and cruel way. Women today are in control and can control situations, rather than having to let men do things for them. Women have much more power and control than they did back then. Back then, they depended so much on men to stand up for women, to help them get what they wanted. Today, we women no longer need to rely on men. We can get help without them and do things on our own.
