  • Essay / Leading Innovation At Kelvingrove (A), case study

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland; a Victorian museum established in 1901 to express the pride, wealth and cultural ambitions of the industrial town of Kelvingrove, needed change in the late 1980s to be more relevant to modern audiences. From 1990, when Mark O'Neil joined Kelvingore Museum, Mark was tasked with bringing innovation to the whole museum by the then Director, Julian Spalding. After an initial start by O'Neil in implementing some of Spalding's radical innovative ideas, O'Neil was followed into a separate project at the St. Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art. St Mungo's work provided insight and experimentation with some of the innovative ideas Spalding wanted to use at Kelvingrove, of using storytelling to organize themes within the museum. In 1993, with work completed at St. Mungo's, O'Neil was finally able to begin the necessary change and find the funding to make the change happen. Between 1994 and 1996, O'Neil developed and began implementing the concept of storytelling when the Kelvingrove Museum submitted its funding application for the museum's renovation. This initial request was rejected, leading O'Neil to completely re-evaluate the approach taken in changing the user experience as well as the approach to requesting funds. It took O'Neil and his team two years to reevaluate and resubmit the project, but finally, in 1998, they were approved for funding for renovations. During this period of re-evaluation of funding, O'Neil concluded that the evaluation of a proposed change at the initial level; to “Figure out how to do it before you spend all the money to get it wrong and it's too late to fix it” (Liedtka & Salzman, 2009, p....... middle of article... .. The questions constantly asked are: “How can we make this experience more accessible to more people? How can we make it better for people” (Liedtka and Salzman, 2009, p. 9) .Answering this question brings us back to the O.
