Essay / The Yom Kippur War - 1811
Israeli preparations for war with Syria were less extensive than Egyptian preparations, as the border was smaller (about 80 miles compared to 40 miles) compared to the Egyptian-Egyptian border. Israeli. (See Figure 2. Border between Israel and Syria). Israel built fortified Jewish settlements in the Golan. Anticipating that Syria would attack with armor, Israel created obstacles, tank traps and minefields. Reinforced bunkers and tank locations were created. The battlefield layout consisted of interlocking fields of fire to stop any Syrian advance. Israel had made peace with Jordan, so there was no need to fortify the Israeli-Jordanian border. Egyptian troops and installation preparations during the War of Attrition stood in direct contrast to Israel's Bar-Lev Line. Egypt did not expect a large-scale attack across the Suez Canal and so there was no need to set up the equivalent of a Bar-Lev Line on the west side of the Suez Canal. They had mobile forces of armor, artillery, and infantry that harassed the Israelis with probes and artillery barrages. Egypt also deployed and withdrew its troops along the Suez Canal. These pushes were deliberately made to lull Israel into complacency and security. Disinformation was practiced and journalists often found Arab documents detailing the shortcomings of Arab unity and military preparedness. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat also contributed. He has repeatedly threatened military action against Israel and deadlines have been missed without any repercussions. Meanwhile, Sadat and his Syrian counterpart, President Hafez al Asad, were determined to take military action. Egypt took steps to address two specific advantages Israel had gained from the Six-Day War: Israeli air superiority and Israeli tank operations. Egypt...... middle of paper ...... would have the tactical advantage from October 6-8 and attack the Golan Heights on three fronts, a northern front, a central front and a southern front . A division allocated to each front and a Ranger battalion to take an Israeli command and control outpost in the Far North. An intense Syrian artillery barrage prepares the assault. Unfortunately for the Syrians, the terrain of the Golan Heights offered limited avenues of approach and Israel therefore had well-planned defensive positions. 37 Three divisions continued to advance along their corridor, encountering heavy resistance from the under-equipped but well-prepared Israeli defensive positions. Syrian armor had difficulty crossing minefields, tank traps and pre-placed obstacles and it was "target practice"38 for the Israeli defenders and the Syrians suffered heavy losses. Syria still has strength in numbers on its side.
