  • Essay / Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot, By Carl Sagan - 841

Carl Sagan, American astronomer, author, astrophysicist, and communicator among other fields of science, wrote Pale Blue Dot in order to expand ideas about the limits of exploration space for the future to ensure that the human population can survive catastrophic events. It describes the insignificance of Earth among the magnificent stars of space, how this prosperous and sociable place we call home is just a pale blue dot among the majestic fireballs of blue and red gases and planets a hundred times larger than Earth. Sagan first presents the origins of human nature in order to formulate a common understanding of why humans cherish life so much and why so many of us believe that no other planet exists like Earth. Our uniqueness stems from human pride. Why and how the human body is so proud and thoughtless is due to overconfidence that led us to initially believe that the Earth was the center of the universe. Sagan explains that human pride is the reason why people initially believed in geocentric theory, that reason could not factor into their mindset because human pride is so valued, and go to the Going against the vain word of the Church would be treason against a higher authority. . Furthermore, scientific tools lacked the precision needed to disprove geocentric theory, so the price of sedition was not worth the price of an indecisive theory. Sagan then moves from a human perspective to a broader perspective in order to recognize humility. to understand that we are not what we think we are, in geocentric theory. Finally, Sagan explains the history of space travel and exploration in our solar system, because this type of exploration and science...... middle of paper ......e capabilities to explore at beyond the limits of our knowledge. Furthermore, Sagan believes that NASA's decision to scale back Moon exploration after the Apollo program was a limited decision, despite the expense and the program's declining popularity with the American public. Sagan says future space exploration should focus on ways to protect Earth and expand human habitation beyond it. The book was published the year after comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter, an event that Sagan uses to highlight the danger Earth faces from an asteroid or comet occasional large enough to cause substantial damage if it were to hit Earth. He says we need the political will to track large extraterrestrial objects, otherwise we risk losing everything. Sagan argues that to save the human race, space colonization and terraforming should be used..
