At first count, the chosen candidate was Mr Scullin (ALP) who received 42.5 per cent of the vote. H would have won if Australia had used a FPTP system, but he received no more than 50 per cent of the first preferences and the procedure was conducted under the rule of a preferential system. In this case, the elimination of candidates continued until the last one. In the last distribution Mr Scullin got 43.7 per cent and Mr Gibson (VFU) who was second at the start he got 56.3 per cent meaning Mr Gibson won with a majority. Votes for Sculin (ALP) were rejected, but if Australia had used a FPTP system it would have rejected more.
