Author of numerous children's books, Karen Mueller Coombs has illustrated that "often the right path is the one that may be hardest for you to follow." This statement explains how no matter what circumstances or experiences a person goes through in life, their character will grow and evolve. This concept is demonstrated in The Kite Runner and The Flying Troutmans. The two main characters show that even though they were raised in different situations, their past choices cause their characters to evolve. Their family complications decrease and their family foundations strengthen. In The Kite Runner, Amir is a young Pashtun boy with a privileged childhood. Hattie is a character from The Flying Troutmans who is a selfless woman with a difficult family history. The concept of diminishing family complications is evident in both novels as Amir and Hattie discover selflessness in the experiences and relationships they encounter, accepting the truth of their realities and empathizing with others members of their family to strengthen their family relationships. Miriam Towes, author of The Flying Troutmans attests to the main character, Hattie, who displayed altruistic qualities during her childhood, which allowed her to strengthen her relationship with her family. Most children focus on play, however, at the age of eight, Hattie spent a whole week traveling to different hospital wards to support her mother, father and sister. Hattie showed him the importance of her family by "spending twenty minutes, in silence, at each bedside, then spending twenty minutes looking for change in each vending machine... It was really... in the middle of a paper. ......being herself, it hadn't worked. (The Flying Troutmans, p. 214) Hattie understands why Thebes is so upset; she can visualize Thebes' point of view since she also grew up with Min. The examples given show how empathizing with someone when they are sensitive is essential to retaining trust within family bonds. Therefore, The Kite Runner and The Flying Troutmans express how possessing the ability to be selfless, accepting the truth, and knowing how to empathize with others will help avoid complications in family relationships. The audience notices the strength of the characters throughout both books. They grow over time and evolve with much improved personality and well-being. People think while looking for ways to benefit and redeem themselves when the real solution is to help those around you and will ultimately help you..
