  • Essay / The Israeli-Palestinian conflict - 1076

Why can't there be peace? What is stopping humans from having lasting world peace? The answer lies in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Jews of Europe were looking for a piece of land where they would be safe from persecution, and they wanted it to be in Palestine, much to the dismay of the Palestinians already living there. The chances of unshakable peace between Israel and Palestine have diminished since the beginning of the struggle between them, and at present, peace is only a dream that will never become a reality. The reason is the arrogance and pride of both groups as well as neighboring countries and other nations who attempted, or did not attempt, to intervene. Because of Israel's “mess,” the goal of “two states living side by side in peace and security” (Source 7, Barack Obama) will never be realized. In 1917, after people saw the persecution of Jews in Europe, such as Alfred Dreyfus, who was accused and convicted of treason, it was decided that a safe home would be created for Jews, and it would be in Palestine: " Her Majesty's Government views favorably the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” (Source 1, Balfour Declaration). Thousands of Jews, seeing that their requests for refuge were granted, emigrated to the region, angering the Palestinians, who had rightfully occupied the land since the 9th century. After the Holocaust, tons more Jews poured in, encouraged by the 1947 UN partition plan that divided Palestine into a Jewish state and a Palestinian Arab state, thus giving rise to a "well-organized, determined" state. and well financed” (One Land, Two Peoples, 2) To the Jews the land and the independence they so yearned for. As we can see in Source...... middle of paper......Rael will continue to ignore Palestinian rights and take unjust actions against the mandates of the Balfour Declaration. Therefore, peace will never transpire between the two. It is Israel's carelessness, Israel's inability to fulfill its initial agreements, the lack of external intercession, and Palestine's dishonesty that make this effort a desperate desire. Since the start of the conflict, relations have gradually deteriorated and it seems unlikely that these two groups of people will ever be able to live in the harmony that many desire. When one side finally seems ready to negotiate, the other does something that reverses any diplomatic progress or simply refuses to cooperate. The best way to put it is Benjamin Netanyahu: “Peace requires reciprocity. This cannot be a one-way street” (Source 8).
