  • Essay / Communicating via Social Media - 1184

The Internet is a global networking system commonly used in 21st century society. Although it is easy to use, it is easy to misuse it. It is essential to realize that “this great tool is just that, a tool, not a way of life” (“What are the effects of social media on our young people?” 1). Youth is the future generation; however, children are growing up in a sea of electronic media. For centuries, communication has been done face-to-face, and as a child we learn communication skills that will be used throughout our lives. Currently, social media is the primary means of communication, with “95% of all teens aged 12 to 17 now online” (Teens Fact Sheet 1). Communication creates relationships, trust and understanding. Technology should enhance communication rather than dictate it. Communicating via social media allows the user to manipulate the conversation and is easier than speaking face to face. In conclusion, social media has had a negative impact on society and has adversely changed the youth generation. Social media allows people around the world to communicate and message each other almost instantly. It's a great communication tool for making friends, or talking to loved ones or loved ones who live far away. Additionally, many young children struggle with social skills. Face-to-face conversations can be intimidating and scary for many children. Talking to classmates or friends online is a great way for shy children to form friendships. Many people post their information online, so social media allows people to make friends with similar interests or hobbies. Taking photos is a very popular hobby these days. For example, “more than 200,000 images arrive every minute on Facebook” (Horaczek 1)... middle of paper ...... resolution problems” (Stein 1). Being so easy to access, social media can easily consume much of the day and has become a vast distraction. “It has become overwhelmingly obvious that our technology has surpassed our humanity” (“Brainy Quotes” 1).
