Overall, this will provide insight into the vulnerable population such as drug addicts. Population Characteristics Substance abuse occurs when a person wants their mind to be changed through drug use. Drug addiction affects all ages, races, religions and incomes. When it comes to the characteristics of drug addicts, there are many factors to consider, including internal and external, physical, behavioral and psychological. According to Demand Media (2013), internal drug addiction occurs when a person feels the need to use drugs regularly, feeling like they need the drug to overcome problems and having difficulty when trying to stop taking drugs. External substance abuse is characterized by the fact that people often notice behavioral, physical, and psychological changes (Demand Media, 2013). According to On-Demand Media (2013), the physical changes are a lack of hygiene, changes in the person's pupils, such as dilation or constriction, and changes in their weight. Some behavioral changes include decreased job performance, changes in type of friends and interests, and asking/or needing money (Demand Media, 2013). As the student researched different resources and treatments, he struggled to find places for addicts. Treatments are expensive and many cannot cope without transportation. This can only happen if the services provided offer transportation to this population. In conclusion, there are many different characteristics, descriptions and resources for addicts. If this population was educated about the resources available and made affordable, drug treatment centers would increase as Health People 2020 would like.
