There are beauty contests not only for women, but also for young girls. The competition subjects young girls and women to competitions based on valuing the body rather than the mind. Bordo describes the competitions as “public control” (19). The girls may not be starving themselves, but their parents make sure they watch everything they eat. “Beauty pageants also encouraged girls as young as five to receive coaching on their appearance” (Bordo 19). Young girls are put on a diet before and during the beauty pageant
