A long time ago, how individuals were treated within a state was the responsibility of the state and it did not matter to the other states. Nowadays, what happens in different states is heard around the world and is monitored very closely. Indeed, discrimination and negative actions against a specific group of people or individuals by state authorities are highly despised by the international community. Although human rights are an important issue, many different organizations and religions have come up with their own ideas/concepts on what human rights are and mean. For example, an idea of human rights can be seen through John Locke and liberal political theorists; this idea suggests that individuals in the international system are equal and that their natural rights take precedence over international and national law. These natural rights include political and civil rights like freedom of speech, religion, and that everyone deserves to be protected. According to the liberal perspective, these rights are called first generation rights. There are two other basic types of human rights: they include second and third generation human rights. Second generation human rights can also be called socio-economic human rights. The concept of second generation human rights is a product of radicalism and socialism.
