  • Essay / Jasmine - 984

JasmineBharati Mukherjee was born on July 27, 1940 in Calcutta, India. (Pradhan) She was born in a rich family, which helped her realize her dream of becoming a writer. She has lived in India, Europe, the United States and Canada. Migrating to these countries so different from his place of birth allowed him to write very powerful novels about immigration experiences. Mukherjee's novels focus on exploring migration and the sense of alienation felt by these immigrants. (Pradhan) Her works have explored themes such as isolation, sexism, discrimination, mistreatment of Indian women, and the exploration of identities. In the novel Jasmine by Bharati Mukherjee, the character has some similarities with the author, but there are many differences. Both were born in India, but Jasmine was not born into wealth. Jasmine does not have the same resources as Bharati, so it is more difficult for her to leave her home and emigrate to the United States. One of the similarities between Jasmine and the author is their drive to go after what they want and not stop until they get it. Bharati's desire is to become a writer, and Jasmine's is to go to the United States. Another similarity is their struggle to find their identity when they emigrate to the United States. This is one of the major themes of Jasmine. An important aspect of the novel Jasmine is that it is not written in chronological order. The novel is written as if the main character remembers the events out of order. The author used this method of writing quite effectively. It wasn't entirely confusing and it created a mood of anticipation of what's to come. The novel begins when Jasmine is a young girl in India. She consults an astro...... middle of paper ......her child arrives. This is proof that it is moving further and further away from its Indian values. Someone might say that Jasmine is about a struggling victim in America or that she is an immigrant who assimilated to become American. I think it's a bit of both. I think the main theme of this novel is the exploration of identities. Jasmine's struggle in America and her immigration experience force her to explore herself and discover what she is capable of doing in life. Jasmine goes through several stages in her life. Even his name changes throughout the novel, becoming more American, which corresponds to the stages of his life. Jasmine went through metamorphoses in this novel in which she had to endure many terrible events and some wonderful events in order to become the person she is at the end of the novel when she leaves Bud to be with Taylor..
