Essay / Old Society versus New Society - 1637
Learning the end of the story, A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, Homer was dead during all the years Emily went into solitude, we can see how Emily decomposes over time. When Emily's father died, she barely left the house (Faulkner 150). A smell came from the house, a stench that his neighbors began to complain about (Faulkner 151). Her neighbors became very concerned about the smell and about Emily herself. However, no one really went to confront her about it. People care about their environment because it is an equal representation of themselves. No one would want to live in a dirty and tarnished environment. People like to express themselves in front of others by giving a presentation. People become gloomy, as do their surroundings. When you live in a depressing place, you become depressing too. We become part of our environment and this environment influences us externally. One of Grierson's neighbors tried to convince the mayor if he could talk to Emily about the smell. The mayor then was Judge Stevens and he was eighty years old (Faulkner 150). It was still the days of the Old South, and the mayor thought it was ungentlemanly business. Instead, some neighbors gathered one night and snooped around Emily's house and broke into her abode to clean it out (Faulkner 151). Emily collapsed after her father's death. Her neighbors came to the house to console her but she was not in mourning. Usually when someone dies, they wear black, signifying their condolences and sorrow. However, Emily was not wearing such an outfit. On the other hand, she told the neighbors that her father did not die for the next three days (Faulkner 151). When someone close to us dies, we...... middle of paper ...... arted again. She started dating Homer, then locals suggested she get married. After Emily and Homer "got married", they never left the house again. The next time the townspeople saw her, “she had gained weight and her hair was turning gray” (Faulkner 154). It's clear that Emily hasn't taken care of herself. She gave in and began to fall into disrepair, just like her house. No one said a word to her, everyone just took pity on her. Today's society would act very differently if someone were in Emily's condition. Every day our government develops new organizations that can help others so they can better themselves. Nowadays, people stop feeling sorry for others and put their sympathy to good use by intervening and taking action. Because only human beings can understand what other human beings feel. We need this connection with others to help us.
