Nurses play a very important role in providing care to an elderly person and in the case of complex diseases such as Parkinson's disease, the care provided by a nurse is vital for both the patient and the family of the person concerned. The aim of this essay is to briefly understand Parkinson's disease and associated problems and the role of the nurse in managing the disease. Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by resting tremors, slowed movements, rigidity and postural instability (Casey G, 2013). It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease (Martin and Mills, 2012). There is wide variability in reported incidence rates, likely due to differences in diagnostic criteria and case ascertainment, with reported rates in Australia and Western countries ranging from 8.6 to 19.0 for 100,000 inhabitants (J Macphee and D Stewart, 2012).
