    The searing heat, sheer exhaustion, and constant fear convey the grim image of war. The definition of war is varied and “often the proposed definition masks a particular political or philosophical position” (Moseley). Colonel William Travington describes his beliefs about the brutality of war through a simple phrase: "You know, it's a nasty business to do one's duty...but every now and then it's a real pleasure" ( “The Patriot”). Our country is home to a diversity of views on what it means to be an American and the loyalty that comes from this earned title. Being an American is a privilege, not a right. The sacrifices made during the war show the true price of being free. Freedom is the foundation of our country, and the steps Americans are willing to take to protect that freedom reveal their dedication to their country. What costs will we incur to maintain the well-being of our nation? The answer to this question is a direct result of the "patriotism" shared by the members of this great nation.1 Analysis of popular music, classical art, educational films, and American literature allows us to define the American identity based on opportunity, hard work. , and loyalty. Ordinary men are ready to give their lives for the honor of their country. Foreigners fight daily for the right to be called Americans. They do this to acquire and fulfill a meaningful life as an American citizen. Memorial sculptures such as the Iwo Jima were created to honor men who died fighting for the principles they believed in. 2 This particular sculpture symbolizes a major victory for American soldiers who helped free Jews from Nazi control.3 This country represents a strong and independent nation, as well as a trustworthy country...... middle of paper. ..... America where it is today. Patriotism for your country comes from your personal beliefs. It's when you truly love your country and stay loyal to it, no matter the cost. The men and women who fought to defend the honor of our country are the true patriots. The war is not supported by everyone, but these men still risk their lives to protect the freedom of citizens who do not believe in what they are fighting for. For them, it's all about remaining loyal to America and standing up for what they believe in. Hard work is another factor that has led America to an inevitably prosperous future. The men and women of this country do not earn their living through lack of effort. Even in times of economic crisis, Americans looked for work instead of giving up. To be an American is to be part of a great society that strives to build itself through loyal citizens..
