The scientific name of the dwarf seahorse is hippocampus zosterae. The dwarf seahorse faces an uncertain future. It is threatened by habitat loss (biological diversity). It is the slowest fish in the world with a speed of five feet per hour (Guinness World Records). It spends most of its time using its tail to cling to seagrass beds and catch tiny plankton. They are primarily found in the Florida Keys, Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Gulf of Mexico (Monterey Bay Aquarium). The female generally reaches reproductive maturity at 118 days. Dwarf seahorses get to know each other before mating. They will dance for several mornings before attaching their tails and mating. When mating, they moved up to the water column (Live Aquaria). The male seahorse is always pregnant and never demonstrates sexual role reversal. The male gives on average 10 to 30 fry. The fry are independent from birth and immediately begin eating freshly hatched brine shrimp. The babies would be well developed and after three months could also mate (Monterey Bay Aquarium). When they mate, they do not take any additional partners offered to them (Animal Diversity Web). The dwarf seahorse feeds primarily on non-insect arthropods and is always a carnivore. To catch food, they cling to seagrass beds and are well camouflaged and catch tiny drifting animals like brine shrimp, copepods and freshly hatched shrimp larvae. Their prey is sucked close by the snout. The progression of food in the seahorse is very rapid, which causes it to absorb few nutrients. For this reason, the seahorse can consume up to 3,000 brine shrimp per day (Animal Diversity Web). Predators of the pygmy seahorse include tuna, sea bream, rays, penguins, crabs and waterfowl. Young dwarves run the risk of being in the middle of paper... their ecosystems. As predators, they help regulate the populations of their prey. As prey for other animals, they provide a food source.
