Essay / Alexander Hamilton's Political Accomplishments - 2127
He believed that if the agreement was ever ratified, Washington would be the first president. "This... will ensure a judicious choice of men to administer the government." (Brookhiser 90) Well, he certainly wasn't wrong, and "One of the wisest choices Washington made, two years later, was Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury." (Brookhiser 90) Alexander Hamilton served as the first-ever Secretary of the Treasury for five and a half years. During this period he accomplished many feats such as submitting to Congress "...a report on the public credit which provided for the financing of the domestic and foreign debts of the United States, as well as the federal assumption of the debts revolutionaries of the States. ยป Hamilton.org) His arguments for a more powerful central government were so strong that he managed to reach an agreement with longtime critic Thomas Jefferson that would include official support for Hamilton's plan. In fact, Alexander Hamilton is almost solely responsible for establishing the credit of the entire United States. He created the very first National Bank and published a report on it that involved a brilliant, if complex, plan that required the U.S. government itself to take out loans just to finance the construction of the bank. It was a success with the Senate and passed virtually unanimously, despite some criticism, thus preserving Hamilton's respect and influence. Even while maintaining a position like his own, Hamilton was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1791. He also created the American Mint with the help of the European economics he learned during the war of independence. Hamilton also contributed to some small political projects during this period, such as the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 which ended before it began, many debates regarding manufacturing, and was even indirectly involved in the creation of the Coast.
