Essay / Negative effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOS)
Food, food, food, that's what our American culture revolves around. It is assumed that biotechnology has been used to make “improvements” to our food, from the fast food industry to our local grocery store. This went largely unnoticed by the general public. Perhaps you have heard of a GMO? These so-called enhanced genetically modified organisms are not beneficial to our bodies at all, but the FDA wouldn't want us to notice. GMOs include alfalfa, corn, flax, rice, sugar beets, yellow squash, canola, cotton, papaya, soybeans, zucchini and wheat. What exactly are GMOs? According to the Non-GMO Project, these are "genetically modified organisms": plants or animals created using the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology fuses DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding. (Non-GMO) This is important to know because they have a direct effect on the life of every American. They are present in most of the foods you eat, and you don't even know it. Some groups have pushed the issue of putting GMO labels on the products we buy, but this situation has somehow been avoided. The negative effects of GMOs are visible in the results of studies carried out on animals and humans. Animal studies show organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging and infertility. In humans, they found that GMOs remained in their systems for very long periods of time, encouraging the growth of new bacteria, and that the toxic insecticides produced by GMOs like corn could not exit the body quickly. Natural resources are the basis of... .. middle of paper ...... get pregnant because of the toxins that were released into their bodies. New cancers will likely form in humans, or old ones will become much more prevalent. Allergies that people never had can arise from allergens genetically produced in GMOs. I think if we don't start getting to the bottom of this and changing this situation, it will completely take over our power to keep our bodies healthy. Maybe people will start to understand what's happening and become proactive in a food revolution. I always thought I had the power to stay healthy, but after researching the foods I eat, I realized that wasn't the truth. The truth is that GMOs in our foods are very toxic and something needs to be done about their production. Technology has greatly affected the production of this product instead of helping our world, at least in this area.
