  • Essay / Why genetically modified organisms should not be present in food

Why GMOs should not be present in food. Food, everyone has to eat food. During this century, millions of different foods can be eaten. But sometimes, as Americans indulge in luxury food options, I wonder if they really pay attention to how harmful many foods are to their bodies. I think everyone should look to organic foods to help them live a healthier life. The reason foods are so bad for the body is because they contain GMOs. GMOs are “genetically modified organisms” which are plants or animals that have been genetically modified with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur naturally in nature (“GMO Facts,” 2014). Removing GMOs from your daily diet can be extremely difficult due to the fact that when you purchase products containing GMOs, you may not know because it does not need to be labeled (“GMO Facts”). 2014). There is a non-GMO project working to get to where GMO-containing products must be labeled. But until the project succeeds, you really need to do your research on GMO products (“GMO Facts,” 2014). One thing you can look for is the USDA certified organic seal, because according to USDA regulations, GMOs are prohibited in organic farming. When you're shopping, you should and can ask questions about where the food in the store comes from and how it's made. Critics of GMOs claim that genetically modifying a food could affect its nutritional value or create toxins in the food (“Lee,” 2014). GMOs are prohibited in organic foods, which is why it is highly recommended to stop consuming genetically modified foods and start consuming organic products.
